A power trio designed for maximum impact, Chisel surfaced in Washington, D.C. in the early-’90s. Led by Ted Leo, over the course of six years Chisel married substance to style, enriching its literate, heady tunes with vocal harmonies, frenetic guitar, and galloping bass lines by Chris Norborg. The band presaged the ’00s garage rock revival, mixing elements of mod, power pop, and soul to their post-hardcore heritage.
“It’s Alright, You’re O.K.” b/w “The Guns of Meridian Hill” was tracked in October 1996 with Nicolas Vernhes at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn. “It was the moment when we stopped chasing something, and stepped into our own as artists and as a band,” Leo said. Drummer John Dugan adds: “Chisel really started to sound out of our time, not so concerned with fitting in, like we were living in our world. We were really confident in our live show at this point, and we were able to channel that energy a bit more strategically than we had before. Nicolas was good at finding natural tones that complemented the ’60s styles that we were into.” Keeping with the mod theme, the pic sleeve was inspired by German 35MM film packaging, an outlier amongst the Gern Blandsten label’s more traditional punk approach.
We’ll be rolling out the Chisel catalog in bitesized, digital chunks over the course of 2022, with an expanded edition of the band’s landmark final LP Set You Free scheduled for early next year.

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
